Miller Thomson is proud to announce that Partner, Susan Manwaring, has been awarded the prestigious Award of Excellence in Charity and Not-for-Profit AMS/John Hodgson Award by the OBA.

The award recognizes the exceptional contribution and or achievements by members of the Ontario Bar Association to the practice of law in the charities and not-for-profit sector.

Recognized yearly since 2004 as a Leading Practitioner in Charities/Not-for-Profit by Lexpert, Ms. Manwaring’s contributions to the development of charity law include her tireless efforts on a number of committees, namely:

  • National Chair and Executive Member, Canadian Bar Association, Charities & Not-for-Profit Section
  • Member, Risk Management and Governance Board’s Not-For-Profit Organizations Task Force (Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants) 
  • Executive Member, Ontario Bar Association, Charities & Not-For Profit Section
  • Past Editor of the OBA Charities & Not for Profit section newsletter “Charitable Thoughts”
  • Chair; Canadian Association of Gift Planners Government Relations Committee
  • Member, Technical Advisory Committee of the Canada Revenue Agency Charities Directorate since 2004
  • Advisory Council of Imagine Canada
  • Participant in Muttart Foundation Consultations
  • Part of a pro bono team of lawyers for the interveners in the AYSA case
  • Teacher at the Advanced Canadian Gift Planning Course
  • Lecturer for the Canadian Council for International Co-operation
  • Member of STEP, CTF, CAGP

As part of her extensive committee work, Ms. Manwaring has made numerous submissions to the Department of Finance and Parliament on legislation including most recently submissions on Bill C-4. She has assisted with submissions to the Canada Revenue Agency on proposed policies including most recently on the fundraising guidelines. She is among the senior members of the sector that the CRA consults regarding policies prior to releasing drafts such as most recently on the draft policies on foreign activities and the advancement of religion.
